How to Buy Tokyo Subway Discount Tickets

4/26/2016

As I wrote in previous article, the Tokyo subway is one of the best ways to move around Tokyo. I highly recommend to buy Tokyo subway open ticket before you explore the city of Tokyo.

Where can you buy?

You can buy this discount ticket right after your arrival at Haneda airport. There is a tourists information counter on you right after you pass the arrival gate.

The tickets are also sold at some travel agencies located in outside of Kanto area, some hotels and shops such as BIC CAMERA. Please note you need to show your passports with tourists visas to buy the tickets. I believe the easiest way to buy them is at the tourists information counter in Haneda airport if you land there.

Please confirm more information from official website.

How much are they?
Price of tickets
1-Day ticket: Adult 800 yen, Child 400 yen
2-Day ticket: Adult 1200 yen, Child 600 yen
3-Day tickets: Adult 1500 yen, Child 750 yen

In Tokyo subway, the fare of minimum distance (such as one stop away) is about 170 yen. It is easy to recover an expenses of 800 yen within a day.

This ticket is valid on all Tokyo Metro lines and all Toei Subway lines. Please confirm terms of validity before you purchase the tickets.
Tokyo Subway Navigation

As you know, Tokyo subway is connected in complicated ways.  Before you take subways, I recommend to check...
a) name of railways to take
b) direction of trains
c) stations to transfer

One of the useful ways is searching the stations by free Tokyo Metro official application "Tokyo Subway Navigation for Tourists".

You can download it to you smartphone and check it before you take trains. This is available in English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese. It is easy to use and can be used offline.

You can just enter names of stations,
-where you take from
-where you want to go

Then, it gives you information of time to take
-the number of time for transfers
-fare for one adult

Free Wi-Fi is available at many Tokyo Metro stations. You can connect with necessary information on your trip while you wait for your trains even in underground. Tokyo subway discount tickets and free subway navigation application help your trip.

Advanced tickets are available

One more thing before you buy!  There are no Tokyo subway stations connected to Haneda airport.  You need to buy Tokyo monorail railway ticket or Keikyu line ticket to go to your hotel by trains from Haneda airport, even if you buy the discount tickets there.

If you will not take Tokyo subway on the day of arrival to Tokyo, they have advance tickets. The Tokyo subway ticket is valid for one day (or two/three days depends on tickets you buy) from the time you start taking Tokyo subway.
Plan your trip and choose the best way!
