Best Things to Do in Fall in Tokyo

9/29/2016

As typhoon season (mercifully) blows out of Tokyo it is time to get excited about fall! Beautiful, crunchy leaves under boots, warm cups of tea and cooler weather are all things to look forward to during this time of year. But do you know the best ways to spend your autumn in Japan? Awesome Tokyo has the scoop! Here is our Top 5:

5.) See Japanese Cosmos

Despite the stellar name, these having nothing to do with stars in the sky. “Cosmos” are a type of flower and known in Japan as “the cherry blossoms of autumn”.  A great destination for couples and families, Showa Kinen Park has over 5 million of these beauties blooming at the peak of the season. Admission is 410 yen for adults and only 80 yen for children (Ages 6-14). The park is located near Tachikawa Station, about an hour from central Tokyo.

4.) Fruit Picking

Every season in Japan brings new and exciting fruits ripe for the picking. In autumn, it’s a great time to pick delicious Kyoho (Giant Japanese mountain) grapes and 柿 (kaki) persimmons. Usually the picking tours allow for an all-you-can-eat experience right from the source! It is a great, unique date idea, too! The picking season begins in late August and lasts until early November.

3.) Halloween Events

A few decades ago, Halloween was practically unheard of in Japan. Now it’s a huge event that runs rampant all over the city! Celebrate the occasion by visiting Tokyo Disneyland during their Disney Halloween event running from September 8 – October 31. If you are looking for a way to spend the actual day and are prepared to brave the crowds, put on your scariest garb and head on down to Shibuya. The street event has been drawing around 100,000 people in recent years!

2.) Autumn Eats

There is more than fruit to be excited over during this season. If you’re a seafood fan, Japanese sanma or “saury” is often sold freshly grilled on sticks at autumn festivals. There are also many small stalls selling マロン (maron) “chestnuts” which are freshly roasted in brown paper bags. If you are interested in trying something a little different, pick up a purple sweet potato outside of a Japanese supermarket. These are roasted on hot black coals to gooey, mushy perfection. You won’t be disappointed, but be careful, they’re hot!

1.) 紅葉 (kouyou) Autumn Leaves Viewing

This activity tops our list because it is one of the most breathtaking, traditional and beautiful experiences you will have in Japan.  The leaves change to the richest red, orange and yellow hues all over Tokyo and in more rural areas just outside the city.
